 Committee Reports

1st VP Ginny Lund pointed out corrections to the 2010 Schedule printed on the back of our new NWGA Yearbooks.Brentwood Playday on October 8 has been cancelled.  NG & A playday and Board Meeting will be moved to Oct 7  .

3. Ginny also reviewed the Tournament Schedule and was pleased to announce the       addition of Westhaven CC to the roster with playdays on June 10 and September 16.

4.  Club Reps will begin printing the cart fee on the sign-in sheet this year. Most of our member clubs have agreed to the standard fee of $25 or less.

5. Donna Robers, Club Rep for Richland CC, talked about their Monday, June 18th playdate.  It will be a partner event similar to the Tavistock Cup Match play. More details to follow.

6. Linda Post reviewed the details for the Handicap Tournament which is scheduled for Brentwood Country Club July 28-29.  It will be a four-person event with two A players and two B players with two best net balls. You make up your own teams. Tee Times for Wednesday and Thursday will be a shotgun start.  The entry fee is $85.00 and 15-18 teams will be admitted.

The Club Reps in attendance and Ginny Lund, 1sr VP / club representative coordinator were photographed for our scrapbook and our guest speaker, Dori Paschall, offered US Open visors for everyone as they left the meeting..

2nd VP Joanne Walker was thanked for her good work on the new Yearbooks and she reminded us that there is lots of information in the book other than just names and addresses.

Treasurer, Sue Prosch was unable to attend, but the Financial Statement is in the Yearbook. She submitted a budget proposal at the board meeting for it’s review and it was noted this years  donation to Junior Golf will be generous because so many members added $10 to their dues. Also, approximately $500 is saved by sending the dues reminder letter by email.

Handicap Chair, Cathy Wedekind, reported that new members can be submitted at either the Spring or Fall meetings by Club Reps.  Any new member must have a handicap of 19.0 and have maintained that handicap for eight weeks prior to the meeting.  President McDuffie thanked Cathy for researching the handicaps for new member recommendations as well as supplying current handicaps to the Representatives for playdays.

Nancy Schenk, Website Director, requested that all playday results be typed neatly and emailed so she may easily add them to the website and be submitted as quickly as possible after play.

President McDuffie thanked  Libbey Hagewood, Rules Committee and Sandy Hayes, Sunshine for doing a great job of keeping us informed in 2010.

Mary Del Scobey, Junior Golf Chair, has arranged for Junior play at Temple Hills on June 17.  She is hoping for a strong turnout from our membership as well as participants from

1st Tee of Nashville .  She also reminded members that donations of golf balls, etc are always appreciated. Mary Del will coordinate the donations for junior golf.

Jan Bunshaw, Nominating Chair, is accepting suggestions for nominees for next years Executive Board.

    Business

1. President McDuffie gave us all a “gentle reminder” of Players Responsibilities by reviewing page four of the Yearbook which covers such things as sign-up sheets, turning off cell phones, proper attire, cancellation policy and general good golf manners. She stressed the importance of all members presenting a pleasant attitude when visiting other clubs.

2. Debbie also expressed regret at the decisions made by Belle Meade Country Club that caused them to be removed from NWGA Member Clubs.

3. Ravenswood’s 2010 membership has dropped to 3 paid members which is below requirements for member clubs. They have been given  a one year “grace” period  to increase membership interest but no playdays in 2010.  The board will review their status at the end of the year.

4. Wilma Davis, shared information about Westhaven Country Club who is interested in becoming a NWGA member club. She told us a little bit about the club located in Franklin TN which opened September of 2009. They have a Ladies 18 Hole group with 40 paid members and 12-16 ladies playing each week. President McDuffie thanked her for representing Westhaven  CC and offering the NWGA members the opportunity to play there this year.

 New Business

Ginny Lund made a motion to change funding for two day events.  Currently club reps are given $200 for Opening and Closing events as well as all Special Events and Tournaments, this motion would give $400 for two day events.  The motion was seconded by Caryn Crenshaw and it passed.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:26PM

Respectfully submitted,

Joanne Walker 2nd VP thanked reps for updating member information.  Any further changes should be to her by February 26th.  She also asks that reps provide her with complete lists of members whether there are changes or not.  The new yearbook will go to print at the end of March to be ready for Opening Day.

Sue Prosch Treasurer provided everyone with a copy of the proposed budget. Currently there are 230 paid members.   An additional $500 is budgeted for tournaments to encourage participation and increase prize quality if needed.  NWGA members donated $1300 to Jr. Golf in addition to their dues which will be added to the $500 from the Zucker fund for a total of $1800 junior golf donation.  A motion was made by Mary Kelly and seconded by Joanne Parkinson to donate $1,000 to the Women’s Senior TGA Tournament being held at Five Oaks this year. All agreed.  There was discussion about more money being allotted for the Invitational Tournament. It was determined to pay 1/3 of the field participating instead of publishing a set amount of flights. Mary Del Scobey motioned to accept the proposed budget and Sharyn Pelych seconded.  The motion passed.

There was discussion concerning members with disability.  If a member becomes disabled or has a temporary loss of health and doesn’t pay her dues she would have to re-qualify to re-gain membership.  A suggestion was made to pay Emeritus dues and re-instate to full membership when health returns.

 Committee Reports

Cathy Wedekind, Handicap Chair, reminded us the current handicap requirement is 19.0 index.  There was some discussion on whether to change the index and how it might affect membership numbers.  Nancy Schenk moved to keep the 19.0 handicap requirement for 2010 and Sis Cohn seconded. The motion was approved. The Board Meeting schedule was determined by the handicap revision schedule and set for June 17, 2010 at Temple Hills and September 20 at NG&AC.

Mary Del Scobey , Junior Golf, The junior playday will be June 17 at Temple Hills. It will be a shotgun start followed by lunch.  Each player will play her own ball. Mary Del Scobey will be asking Thelma Ewell from First Tee Program what would be the most helpful donation. She stated there is already a nice collection of golf clubs from lost and not claimed that will be donated.  Any short irons/ wedges are appreciated.

President McDuffie thanked Sandy Hayes, Sunshine, for her good work keeping the membership updated on illnesses, surgeries and sympathies.

Libby Hagewood, Rules, is planning a Rules Seminar with details to follow.  She handed out information for new TGA tournament opportunities and some local Rule Certifications and a workshop.  She has invited Dori and Jenny from TGA to speak about the new website at Opening Day.

Nancy Schenk, Web Site Management stated Meeting minutes are now on line as well as the 2010 event schedule.  Nancy asks that the weekly winner’s sheet be typed out so it may easily be added to web site. It is appreciated promptly after each event.

Historian/Publicity committee will now be handled by Debbie McDuffie and she asks for pictures from last year to be sent directly to her.

Future Policy  Mary Kelly reports that Westhaven CC has requested membership in NWGA.  They have a ladies 18 hole group led by NWGA member, Wilma Davis.  Mary stated that even though they do not have a clubhouse yet, their course is a good one albeit new and will continue to improve over time. The TGA has already scheduled an event there, which speaks to the course’s quality. She recommends we accept them as a new member club.  Linda McDugald moved that the Board present the application of Westhaven CC at Opening Day per our Constitution for approval.  Frances Whitley seconded and the motion passed.

New Business

A survey of cart fees was conducted by Ginny Lund and determined that $25.00 or less is reasonable and should be established as our standard fee. (which includes tax).  Club Reps were asked to confirm this with their Pros.  The fees for each club will be written on the sign up sheet so no one will be surprised if different from the standard.

Ravenwood acting representative, Sharyn Pelch, reports that there are only 3 paid members this year.  The By-Laws require 5 members to retain NWGA membership.  Historically there has been little member participation on playdays there.  Ginny Lund reminded the board that 2010 is Ravenwood’s probation year, and membership  interest would have to be increased to be returned to full membership. She has only scheduled one playday this year and if there is no more enthusiasm the club will lose its membership status. A motion was made by Kay Lunsford and seconded by Mary Del Scobey to eliminate Ravenwood from playdays and club membership, and although 3 were opposed the motion passed.  Those opposed sited the new homes being built on the course that include club memberships to Ravenwood.  This makes increased membership a good possibility. The board decided if the membership increases during this probation year they may make a request to be re-instated as a member club. The 3 paid members may enjoy this year of “grace” to play in NWGA events. The playday for Ravenwood this year will be dropped and Ginny Lund will pursue Westhaven CC to fill any open dates.

Honorary Status Nominees

At the 2009 Closing Day Meeting @ Bluegrass CC, the membership approved the board recommendation to change the Constitution/ By-Laws requirements of a Honorary Life member to read: “She has rendered exceptional service or has been past-president of the Association."

Cathy Wedekind, Old Hickory member and Handicap Chair, nominated Beverly White who joined in 1983. Beverly served as an Old Hickory Club Rep 1980-90, 1st VP 1990 and President 1991-1992. It was noted that she, Jan Bunshaw and Gen Williams organized many historical records and instituted changes to procedures we still use today. She has served on the Executive Board from 1993-present.  Jan Bunshaw seconded and it passed unanimously.

Frances Whitley, Temple Hills Club Representative, read a well composed accolade to nominate Linda McDugald  for Honorary Life Membership. Linda joined in 1985 and has held several leadership positions. She was Temple Hills Club Rep from 1989-90, 2nd VP 1989-90 and President from1999-2000.  She has served on Future Policy Committee from 2001 to the present time.  Libby Hagewood enthusiastically seconded and the motion carried by the entirety.

Sis Cohn, Honorary Life Member of NWGA, was extremely pleased to nominate another worthy leader, Ruth Sinquefield for Honorary Life Status. Ruth joined NWGA in 1990, and was Secretary 1999-2000, President 2001-2002 and Future policy 2003-2010.  Kay Lunsford noted what a joy it was to work with Ruth, happily seconded and the motion was approved by the whole board.

Cathy Wedekind, also nominated Kay Lunsford who joined in 1983. Kay was an Old Hickory Club Rep in 1998, 1st VP 1999-2000 and President 2003-2004. She has continued her service on the Future Policy Committee from 2006- to present and continues to be a great ambassador for NWGA.

She plays regularly and has a spirit of hospitality that truly exemplifies what our Association was founded on.  Sis Cohn seconded and it was agreed upon unanimously also.

Brenda Siegel, Legends Club member, recommended Gail Smothers as another deserving leader to honor.  Gail joined NWGA in 1996, served as Club Rep 2001-2002, 1st VP 2003-2004, President 2005-2006 and Future Policy 2007-present. It is no secret that Gail has worked diligently to uphold the integrity of the game of golf and its rules.   Joanne Parkinson seconded and it passed with complete agreement.

Mary Kelly was nominated by Toni Dziegel, Five Oaks representative, for Honorary Life Membership.  Mary joined NWGA in 1999, served as Club Rep 2001-2004, 1st VP 2005-2006, and President 2007-2008.  She has chaired the Future Policy committee from 2009-present.  Donna Robers seconded and it was passed unanimously also.

President McDuffie thanked the board members for honoring these six very deserving ladies.  Nashville Women’s Golf Association is in debt to these women for their great vision, leadership and gifts of time and service.  The letters of nomination will be kept in the Presidents archives.

Debbie McDuffie will send information to the membership regarding NWGA Logo shirts. It is hoped they will be available for Opening Day at Bluegrass CC.

Club Reps for Richland CC, Donna Robers and Angela Stinson described the situation facing NWGA and Richland playdays.  Richland’s Board has voted NOT to allow any outside events during the regular operating days.  They will offer us one day and Monday is the only option.  There will be an extra charge of $15.00 to our standard fee to play. Donna and Angela continue to work on this issue. The possibility of holding a tournament might be more appealing to their Board in the future.  It was decided to accept Richland’s playday this year and hope for a change of status in the future.

Motion to adjourn came at 12:26PM by Sharyn Pelych seconded by Libbey Hagewood.

Respectfully submitted,

NWGA MEMBERSHIP MEETING

BLUEGRASS COUNTRY CLUB

OPENING DAY LUNCH AND SCRAMBLE

APRIL 17, 2009

President Debbie McDuffie opened the meeting by thanking Bluegrass Country Club for hosting our event and club reps Kathi Fox and Caryn Crenshaw for all their hard work.
She also thanked Head Pro Chris Sivier and Assistant Pro’s David Tucker and John Jennings.

President McDuffie called on Valarie  Miller to ask our blessing, then introduced the speaker, Thelma Ewell of 1st Tee of Nashville.  Thelma is a Master coach, one of only five in the world and a LPGA member.  She is now the Director of Golf with 1st Tee of Nashville.  NWGA is partnering with Thelma and 1st Tee this year to support junior golf.  She read two moving essays from her students and thanked NWGA for any help we might provide.

President McDuffie then called us to business.  First, minutes of the Fall General Meeting were read by Secretary, Holly Petrosky.  One correction was noted, Sue Prosch was inadvertently listed as a Ravenwood member instead of Five Oaks. A motion was made to accept the minutes and they passed. In the future, minutes will be emailed to members so reading of minutes may be dispensed and only be amended or approved at the meeting.

Treasurer Sue Prosch was not in attendance, due to recent knee surgery, but it was noted that the treasurer report was printed in the yearbook.

Unfortunately, Denise Pridemore had to resign as 1st Vice President, but we are fortunate to have Ginny Lund take over those duties.  A motion was made by Sharon Pelych and seconded by Gail Smothers to accept Ginny Lund as our new 1st VP.  Ginny was accepted by unanimous vote. President McDuffie thanked Ginny for her many years of prior service to NWGA as Handicap Chairwoman and expressed appreciation for her stepping into this position.

All Club Representatives were recognized and thanked for their hard work.

2nd Vice President, Joanne Walker has updated all yearbook information and the 2009 yearbooks have been distributed to Club Reps.  Debbie thanked Joanne for the excellent job she has done to track down missing information and  to make our yearbook very accurate and informative.

President McDuffie highlighted the most important issues from the Board Meeting, namely that breakfast will no longer be provided on playday and that each member is responsible for tipping bagboys.  These items constituted a significant savings for the budget.  The board also voted to invite 2 new members from each club with certain handicap qualifications.  The new members in attendance were recognized and given a small gift to welcome them.

Committee Chairs were recognized and thanked as were all Past Presidents in attendance. Beverly White, Linda McDugald, Kay Lunsford, Gail Smothers, and our most recent president and Future Policy Chair, Mary Kelly.

Under New Business, President McDuffie discussed the status of Belle Meade Country Club.  Belle Meade is now listed as an “In Active” member club.  Belle Meade members were given a one year “grace” period with their paid dues in hopes that their greens committee will reconsider the unacceptable fee for the NWGA members to play this year.

Scramble Winners were announced and pictures taken.

Results were:

1st Place 66

Bridget Kuzmicki, Catherine Sutton, Janet Vaden, Jean Jones

2nd Place 67

Cindy Moore, Pat Sofranko, Linda Bosler, Dianne Davis

4th Place 67

NWGA Board Meeting Minutes  February 20, 2009  @ Hillwood CC

President, Debbie McDuffie called the meeting to order at exactly 10:30.  She thanked Sis Cohn, a past president, for arranging our meeting and lunch. Debbie also thanked all the club representatives, standing committee chairs and board members for their attendance today. The minutes of the last meeting, date 9-18-09, were read by Holly Petrosky, Secretary.  Mary Del Scobey moved they be accepted as read, Jan Bunshaw seconded and the motion was passed.  A motion from Mary Del Scobey for minutes to be emailed to the board and representatives prior to the next meeting to suspend their reading.  Linda McDearmin seconded and it passed.  Roll call by Holly Petrosky.

No representatives were present from Ravenwood or Richland.  A complete  list of attendees will be at the end of this document.

1st Vice President, Denise Pridemore highlighted the 2009 schedule and two format additions for playdays adding an Alternate  Shot and a Scotch Two-ball.   Tournament notebooks were available and Denise will provide envelopes on Opening Day for playday information to be mailed to her after play.  In an effort to go paperless, she will be emailing the playday sheets to the Club Representatives.

The next board meetings will be held at Bluegrass CC on 6-18-09 and Temple Hills on 10-9-09.

2nd Vice President, Joanne Walker, requested any updated info for the Yearbook. Any  inactive member may become Emeritus by donating $10.00 to Jr. Golf. (Review page 63 of the 2008 yearbook for Emeritus Information)

Treasurers Report and  Proposed Budget were given by Sue Prosch treasurer. The balance as of January 1, 2009, was $2,683,49.  There is concern about lack of membership dues and current status in the “RED”.   Mary Ruth Geny made a motion to discontinue money paid to the clubs for breakfast and tips for bagboys. It was seconded by Jan Bunshaw and allowed us to save $1900.00 by not paying this extra money on regular playdays.

*We need to emphasize to all our members that NWGA will not be paying tip money and it would be the responsibility of each player and good etiquette to tip our helpful bagboys.  We will still continue to pay the $200 for breakfast items/ etc. on special tournaments and shotgun start events. (We failed to vote on The Budget during the board meeting. Debbie McDuffie emailed the budget to all board members and it passed)

Sandy Hayes, Sunshine Chairman, ask to be notified if any member is hospitalized or

Has a family member pass away.  She would like to send a card on behalf of NWGA.

Mary Del Scoby, Jr. Golf, thought our Jr. Golf donations might be better directed to public schools or Metro programs.  She will contact Sally Davis, Metro Parks for more information.  Sue Prosch noted that we had an especially good number of people who donated to Jr. Golf this year. To date we have received $810.

Publicity Chairman, Linda McDearman, highlighted the difficulty and changes in the ability to get pictures and/or articles in local papers.  Linda made a suggestion that the Historian and Publicity Chairs be combined. Kay Lunsford made a motion to reflect this suggestion and it was seconded by Frances Whitley. The motion passed.

Nancy Schenk, Website Director, was out of town but always wants results to be emailed to her promptly and wants to put pictures on the web site.

Debbie McDuffie, proposed

Debbie McDuffie, proposed several items for discussion under new business.

1)       A decision for continued relationship with  Belle Meade Country Club and it’s members must be made.

The Belle Meade greens committee has decided to change the fee to play to $150. for each player. After much discussion, Blondy Stevens, Club Representative for Belle Meade ask that we extend a “grace” period of one year for their members in order to continue negotiations and possible reinstatement next year. Mary Ruth Geny made a motion to give Belle Meade CC a one year sabbatical during which time their members may retain their membership in NWGA with their paid dues. This issue will be reconsidered at the beginning of next year.  Frances Whitley seconded and the motion passed.

2)       There is a need to boost membership and funds to our budget. We are currently under 195 active members which is the lowest in many years. Options in the past have been to lower handicap entrance qualifications and extend special invitations to gain new members.

Jan Bunshaw made a motion that each active club make a special invitation to two new members in their “18” hole group with the lowest handicaps based on 20 scores posted in the last 12 months and a maximum index of 23.   Jana Porpora seconded and the motion passed.  These new members will be allowed to play and be presented at the opening day scramble and luncheon at Bluegrass CC on April 16th. Club Reps will submit names by Tuesday Feb.24 to President McDuffie and she will send a letter of welcome to these new members. Dues are to be paid to Sue Prosch promptly.

3)  A motion was made by Mary Ruth Geny to change the required handicap index for new members in 2009 to 19.0.  Sis Cohn seconded and the motion passed.

Debbie McDuffie accepted a motion to adjourn at 12:15 pm.

Respectfully submitted

Holly Petrosky, Secretary
